Seneca \s(e)-ne-ca\ as a girl's name (also used as boy's name Seneca), is of Native American Indian origin. The Seneca tribe of Iroquois lived in the Finger Lakes area of Western New York state. A lake, river, and town were named after them. Seneca was also the name of a prominent Roman philosopher who was tutor to the emperor Nero.
